Abuse of foodbank servicesDear editor: I would like to express my concern at the people that are abusing the services of the Shelburne Foodbank which is supposed to be for people suffering hardship, low income and disabilities, and who are unable to afford groceries some weeks. I myself have had hardship problems, recently and have appreciated this programme on weeks when I have had no food in my pantry and this was the only source of me being fed. I have recently noticed an increase in people going to the foodbank – drunk or under the influence of other substances – and requesting free food. I believe that if these people can afford alcohol, etc, then they are not really having hardship problems, and they obviously have money which could be spent on food. They should be turned away. It is not fair for the community of Shelburne to provide support and then its abused by people that do not really need it. The organizers should have the right to refuse these people as they are taking away help from other people that really need it, If I can tell that someone is under the influence at 6:30 in the evening, then the staff should also be able to notice and refuse them help.
