Senior Cubs secure spot in North Dufferin Baseball League playoffsWritten By Brian Lockhart The Mansfield Senior Cubs have secured a berth in the North Dufferin Baseball League playoffs. The Cubs went up a notch in the standings to sixth place after a 12-2 win over the Bolton Dodgers in Mansfield on Sunday,August 15. Only the top eight teams in the league will go to the playoffs which are scheduled to get underway after the labour day weekend (September 6). Sunday's game against Bolton got off to a good start for the Cubs when they brought in eight runs in the first inning. From there they kept the bats moving and had success throughout the entire game. Eric Jones started off on the mound for the Cubs. The Cubs blew the game wide open in the fourth inning when Tyler Greer hit a three-run home run and knocked the ball deep into the trees behind the centre field fence. It was a short game. After bringing in another run in the fifth inning, the game was called due to the league mercy rule which calls for a game to be called when there are 12 runs scored with a large score gap. The team is looking good this season and taking direction from the coaches who are determined to see the squad succeed. “The boys are starting to listen and they're starting to hit the ball square,” said coach Roger Maes of the team's early game success. “They're starting to get what I'm throwing down. We've got one game left against the Bolton Brewers. We're going to be a lot better next year – we got some juniors coming up. For that last game we're going to play everybody. Everybody's going to get in who haven't been getting in. We'll have one batting practice before we start the playoffs. Whoever we go up against in the playoffs, they're going to get everything we've got – that's for sure. The boys aren't quitting, they're not quitters.” After the weekend, the New Lowell Knights were leading the pack in the standings followed by the Bolton Brewers. The Barrie Angels were in third place and the Ivy Leafs in the number four spot. The Creemore Padres are one spot ahead of the Cubs in fifth place. |
