Shelburne athletes added to Brock University rugby team

Two Centre Dufferin District High School athletes have been added to the Brock University Badgers women's rugby team.

Jordan Smith and Taylor Pate, are joining the team after competing in the provincial program and Rugby Canada's Development Academy.

The Badgers have received commitments from both women for the upcoming 2022 Ontario University Athletics season.

“Each one of these incredible athletes competed for Rugby Ontario, the national academy and are on the long list for Ontario's team competing in the Canada Summer Games, which will be played on our home field at Brock,” said Badgers head coach Mark Smerdon. “Beyond rugby, they each possess greater character and will add to our team culture.”

Jordan captained her high school rugby team at Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS) to winning its first Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations provincial medal.

She will be attending Brock and studying Concurrent Education.

“I was drawn to Brock because of how intimate the campus is and had an instant sense of the university's tight-knit community,” Jordan said “The Concurrent Education Program is one of the best in the province. I can't wait to develop as a Badger under this fantastic coaching staff and their emphasis on team culture.”

Taylor joins the Badgers with experience as a centre and winger. She helped CDDHS win district championships for volleyball and basketball, and a bronze medal at OFSAA.

She will be studying nursing at Brock.

“I became interested in Brock because of the great experiences I had with the coaching staff and loved the idea of a campus with a community feel,” Taylor explained. “All of the women on the tam that I've met so far have been so welcoming and helpful.”

The Brock women's rugby team starts training camp on Saturday, August 20.
