Mulmur council candidate withdraws

The Township of Mulmur will have one less candidate in the running for a spot-on council, as councillor candidate Barry Smith announces his official withdrawal from the election race. 

In an email to the Free Press, Smith said his decision to pull from the candidacy race was due to “health reasons.”  He initially filed for candidacy in the 2022 election on Aug. 16. 

“With deep regret I am withdrawing from the election in Mulmur Township for councillor due to health reasons,” wrote Smith. “There are excellent candidates running the upcoming election and I want to make sure that every vote counts. The ballots are already prepared so I just want the voter to know that when they go to vote, which candidates are in the running.” 

Five names remain in the running for the three councillor seats open on Mulmur Council – Daryl Stansfield, Timothy Trafananko, Andrew Cunningham, Kim Lyon, and Patricia Clark. Incumbent deputy mayor Earl Hawkins and Councillor Shirley Boxem, are both running for the position of deputy mayor. 

Janet Horner, the incumbent mayor candidate, ran uncontested in her bid for re-election and was acclaimed to the role for another term. 

The municipal election will be held on Oct. 24.
