The Town of Shelburne is one step closure to having a new outdoor recreation sport for families and children to beat the summer heat with structural construction of the Shelburne Splash Pad underway.

The Rotary Club of Shelburne shared an update on the construction process of the local splash pad at Greenwood Park on their Facebook page on May 17.

“It's exciting that it's in the ground. We don't know the exact time that it's going to open, but all the features are there, the cement is in, and we're just waiting for the electricity to go in,” said Sandra Gallaugher, chair of the Shelburne Rotary Club. “It's a relief to see it being built and we're excited that it's coming to this conclusion.”

In October 2019, members of the Splash Pad Committee met with Shelburne Town Council to present the project idea. The presentation outlined a draft of the projected design, potential locations for the splash pad, costs for the project, and fundraising.

The committee met again with the council in early 2020, where the location for the splash pad was decided to be Greenwood Park. The Shelburne Rotary Club later entered a contract with Park N Play Design to provide the equipment for the splash pad.

The splash pad was budgeted at $700,000, with the committee raising $300,000 of it and the Town of Shelburne contributing the remaining $400,000 and covering the annual operating costs.

In January, members of the Shelburne Splash Pad Committee and town councillors marked the first steps in the construction with a shovel-turning ceremony at Greenwood Park to celebrate the start of the ground-breaking construction.

The Shelburne Rotary Club is still accepting donations for the Splash Pad initiative, which will be used for additional items such as benches, signage, and picnic tables.

While there is no firm date for when the Splash Pad in Shelburne will open, officials said the goal is to have the structure up and running by early July, just in time for summer.
