Remembering Shelby –a warning to pet owners

Dear editor:

Our beloved Shelby, an eight year old Chow/Shepherd was murdered either intentionally or accidentally in our back yard on August 17, 2012. The cause of death was rat poison in an apple. I found part of the apple and poison after I spent 10 hours with her in the vet hospital while her health deteriorated and she passed away. She had never hurt anyone, loved people especially children, was quiet and was always on her leash if she was not in our fenced yard.

When I think about it I am heart broken but I am also horrified. This could have happened to a small child who may have picked up the apple and taken a bite out of it. It could have been someone else's beloved pet.

I hope people will think twice before they put poison out even if it is to kill raccoons, skunks or any other pest they may not want in their yard. We lost a family member and I don't want it to happen to another family.
