Terry Fox Run at CFB Borden raises $22KSunday, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden members participated in the annual Terry Fox Run raising over $22000.00 in support of cancer research. This annual event, with a large participation of staff and students from many of the units and training establishments geographically located on the Base, is a source of pride for the Defence Team members at CFB Borden. 1500 people participated in this year's run. “Raising funds for such a worth while cause is very near and dear to the members of the Defence Team at CFB Borden” said Canadian Forces Base Borden / Canadian Forces Support Training Group Commander Colonel Carl Doyon. “The fact that we have the ability to help members of our community and Canadians across the country through raising money for cancer research allows us to give back to the community that supports us so much” The event day began with an opening address by both the Base Commander and Mr. Fred Fox, brother to Terry Fox, welcoming all participants to the this year's event followed by the official start of the Run. Both Brigadier-General Louis Meloche, Commander of Canadian Forces Recruiting Group and Base Run organizer Lieutenant Suzie McBride had their heads shaved by participants of the run raising over $2500.00 towards the CFB Borden total amount raised. The event ended with the announcement of the total amount raised and words of thanks from both Colonel Doyon and Mr. Fox. “For millions of people worldwide Terry Fox is the face of cancer research. His Marathon of Hope inspired a country and The Terry Fox Run, now in its fourth decade, continues to motivate people here in Canada and around the world. To date, over $600 million has been raised in support of Terry's cause. Terry's vision and courage have helped to change and reshape Canada in many ways. Importantly, it transformed cancer research here – establishing a new attitude and threshold regarding what kind of investment was necessary to support cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation (“TFF”) continues to be a leading national investor in cancer research. TFF remains true to Terry's wishes today by directing all funds raised in his name to cancer research. For more than 31 years, funds have been provided to support cure-oriented, biomedical cancer research around the globe. In 2007, the Foundation created The Terry Fox Research Institute (“TFRI”), with a mandate to conduct translational research to significantly improve outcomes for patients. In the previous fiscal year (ending March 31, 2012), TFF directed $27.5 million to its cancer research programs.” (http://www.terryfox.org/Research/Terry_Fox_Foundation_Funded_Research.html) |
