Shelburne Library news

A lovely long weekend coming up! A wonderful time to spend with friends and families... and also time to grab a few moments when you are winding down to read a good book. If you don't have one on hand be sure to come in before Saturday because we are closed Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday.

Children's Programs: Our Toddler's Storytime started today and we had a very nice group of moms and tots who joined in with the songs and finger plays. Do come out and join in the fun at this early literacy activity. The activities stimulate the auditory, visual and tactile senses.

For the months of October, November and December, we will be hosting quite a number of elementary students to orient them to our library. We do enjoy introducing the kindergarten children to the colourful and engaging resources we have for them here in the library.

Adult and Seniors Programs: On Thursday, October 17, we will be holding a Coffee Break to support the Alzheimer Society. Drop by for a coffee and some treats from noon until 8 p.m. This is National Library month and we are using the Coffee Cafe to launch Ontario Public Library week which runs October 21 to 26.

We have started our second round of home deliveries to seniors. This is such an enjoyable opportunity for us to support seniors in their reading interests. We also have about 25 new CNIB Talking books that we received this week and that are available for loan. It is exciting to announce that in September, we signed out 148 of these DAISY format Talking books to our patrons with visually and physically impairments. I was at a meeting of the 7 or 8 libraries in our area who report sign outs of less than 10.

Book Sale: When you come next Thursday for the Coffee Break, you can grab your coffee and walk around our book sale. These will all be sold as a bag of books for $2. They are paperbacks, older editions but still great for a good read or a travelling book which you can leave behind for someone else. We are keeping our really special books for our November Book sale which will feature our very popular Book gift baskets, special collections etc.  These books will all be in excellent shape and on a variety of topics.

The November Book Sale will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conjunction with our very popular Silent Auction fundraiser. By the way, we are already looking for donations for that event. We have been very fortunate in the past number of years to receive many exceptional donations for this Auction. Since we are holding the Holiday Home Tour every other year, this year the Silent Auction will be our only fundraiser.

While the following list doesn't seem too long, we have also catalogue 34 DAISY Talking books and for your interest, over 2, 500 books have been catalogued and added to the collection to date this year.

Fiction:

Never go back by Lee Child

The Ill made knight by Christian Cameron

The State we're in by Adele Parks

Four Summoner's tales by Kelley Armstrong

The Salinger contract by Adam Langer

Cinnamon toast and the end of the world by Janet E. Cameron

The Twins by Saskia Sarginson

The son of a certain woman by Wayne Johnston

Non fiction:

The once and future world by J.B. MacKinnon

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
