Here are the top 5 safety tips for pet proofing your Halloween celebrations: 1. Candies are for humans – not for pets: chocolate, sugars, baked goods, artificial sweeteners are all toxic to animals even in very small amounts.  All the candy wrappers are objects that can become lodged in your pets' digestive system and cause major harm. Keep the candy bowl well out of reach of paws and muzzles. 2. Keep pets indoors: Make sure your pet is inside safe and sound – not outside in the yard somewhere. Unfortunately this time of year brings out people who are inclined to hurt animals – don't let your cat or dog fall victim unnecessarily. 3. Ghosts at the door: The continuous ringing and knocking on your front door may cause stress for your pet. Not to mention the people that come to the door are in strange outfits and makeup that may scare your pet. Watch your pet carefully and give him a safe place to be while all the zombies and ghouls come to the door. Even the most sociable of animals can react negatively in a stressful situation. If you have them in a safe place then there is no risk of them darting out the door in fear. 4. Pumpkins and decorations:  keep your pumpkins and candles out of your pets reach as these can become a fire hazard. A wagging dog tail or a kitty running around can knock over candles causing burns/fires. Hanging decorations and electrical cords can be hazards to curious pets who want to chew, paw at and eat whatever interests them. Watch your pet carefully so they do not get into trouble. This is another reason to consider putting your furry friend in a safe area of your home away from all the hazards. 5. Pet costumes: not many animals feel happy in a costume. Please do not put a costume on your pet unless they are 100% comfortable in it. If they are not comfortable then opt out of the costume or put a festive bandanna on instead. If they are comfortable it is your job to ensure the costume allows them to move freely and that they can see and hear without any obstructions. Even the easiest going of dogs and cats will become stressed out if they feel trapped inside a costume.  Make sure the costume does not have anything that they can chew and swallow and never leave them unattended in their costume. Give these simple common sense steps a try so everyone can have a fun festive time. Have a safe and happy Halloween!
