Halloween safety tips

It's that time of year! Tonight, October 31st, ghosts, witches, princesses, superheroes and alike, will be excited with the anticipation of going door to door collecting Halloween treats! Children will not be thinking about cars and other hazards so we all need to do our part in keeping them safe while they enjoy this annual ritual.

The Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind motorists to drive carefully, as children may be on the roadway. Parents and caregivers, take a few minutes to review the following safety tips with your child:

• Plan your route and share it with your family; never go trick-or-treating alone

• Wear light coloured or reflective material on your costumes so you can be seen

• Avoid long costumes and accessories which might cause you to trip or hurt yourself

• Use face paint rather than a mask so you can see better

• Carry a flashlight to light your way

• Walk don't run – stay on sidewalks – not the street

• Look both ways before crossing the street

• Cross the street at intersections only

• Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars

•  Only visit homes that are well lit

• Accept treats at the door – never go into a stranger's house

• Be cautious of animals and strangers

•  Don't eat any treats while out trick-or-treating – especially if the package is already open

• Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating them
