Unique Call: “Camel on Roadway”: It was around midnight on Wednesday October 23rd. It was snowing.  Shelburne Police and Dufferin OPP received several calls for a camel on highway 10 on the north edge of Shelburne. Officers found the camel on highway 10 licking the salt on the roadway. With the assistance of the owners of the animal, the camel was returned to its barn at the corner of Highway 10 and 4th Line of Melanchthon. Fortunately there was no collision involving the camel. However the incident did provide entertainment for onlookers as police and the owners tried gaining the animal's co-operation. The three Toronto incidents include charges in relation to drug trafficking, obstructing justice, prowl by night, theft, break and enter and court recognizance breaches. As a result Belrose was held in custody awaiting another bail hearing. Business Fraud Prevention Seminar: Wednesday November 6th – Part of Crime Prevention Week: Every year the Ministry of Safety and Correctional Services designates a week in November as Ontario Crime Prevention Week. Police services throughout the province take advantage of this week to focus on crime prevention awareness and education in their communities. Again this year the Shelburne Police Service is joining this effort to promote a safer or more crime free community. This year the Shelburne Police Service is putting the focus on preventing crimes at our local businesses. The goal is to make local business owners and managers more aware and better educated on the prevention of fraud, theft and other property crimes. The Shelburne Police regularly investigates frauds, thefts and other property crimes that not only cost businesses money, but are very frustrating and disheartening for the business owners and managers who take pride in their role in the community. As part of this initiative Shelburne Police is hosting a Business Crime Prevention presentation on Wednesday November 6th at 7 p.m. The presentation taking place at Grace Tipling Hall (Town Hall) will focus on two main areas: Fraud prevention and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design. The fraud prevention portion will focus on credit cards, quick change artists, gift cards / vouchers and price tag switching. The event will explain how these crimes work, how to prevent them and what to do if a fraud is suspected. The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) portion of the evening will be presented by an officer with specific training in this area.  CPTED is an approach to crime prevention that developed through various studies and crime statistics. Is your business an easy target for crime? Or is your layout, lighting and other security measures making criminals think twice about targeting your business? The invitation to this free event is open to all local businesses – just show up on Wednesday November 6th at 7 p.m. There will be light snacks and beverages provided. There will be a question and answer period immediately following the presentation. “Grandma I need money” – Watch Out For This Fraud: Residents in Shelburne reported receiving calls for young males asking for help and money.  In one case a youth requested $2,500. These residents hung up recognizing there was something suspicious. This type of fraudulent activity targeting seniors is not new.  Typically a young person calls a senior citizen claiming they need bail money, or they got involved with the wrong people and owe money, or they are out of province or country and need money to get home. The young person pleads with the senior not to tell anyone including mom and dad about the situation and provide information how to send or “wire” money to an account. Occasionally a kind hearted senior follows through with the request, assuming it is actually their own grandchild. Never send any money anywhere without verifying who is calling and their story. This can be done by: • contacting other family members (chances are your grand child is at home right where they are supposed to be), • checking with local police or the police in the area where the young person claims to be in • asking detailed questions that only your grandchild will know the answer to Remember to always contact the police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre about any suspicious phone calls, e-mails, mail or home visits. Shelburne Police Partnering with Centre Dufferin High School for MOVEMBER: Members of the Shelburne Police Service will be teaming up with the Centre Dufferin District High School to participate in “Movember 2013.” Police, teachers and students of CDDHS will be sporting moustaches to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer during the month of November. If you wish to participate or make a donation please enquire with the Shelburne Police Service.   --------------------------------------------------- Images: --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Post date: 2013-10-31 10:36:32 Post date GMT: 2013-10-31 14:36:32 Post modified date: 2013-11-07 20:09:42 Post modified date GMT: 2013-11-08 01:09:42 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Export of Post and Page as text file has been powered by [ Universal Post Manager ] plugin from www.gconverters.com
