This year's endeavor's were a huge success raising $3,380.85 by students, the equivalent donated by the Scotia Match Funds Program, and a donation of $1,500 by school Custodian, Darrell McKechnie on behalf his family's annual charity fundraising baseball tournament, The Lisa McKechnie Memorial Tournament, for a grand total of  $8,261.70. Office Co-Ordinator,  Cheryl Hincks explained, “ Each student is provided with a package and they usually approach family and friends for their sponsorships. They keep track of all donations and record figures right on the envelope. The success of this event has a tremendous impact on a lot of programs for students we wouldn't be able to provide for otherwise. What astounds me is how me how much community support we have for the school. Also, it's a really great time. The kids love dressing up. And one student on their own, raised $278! Impressive.” An interesting back story for this particular fundraising event surrounds The Lisa McKechnie Memorial Baseball Tournament. This annual charity event run completely by family and volunteers has raised over $40,000 to help support many local organizations, all High Schools and Athletic programs including purchasing Girl's Hockey team jerseys. Still fresh in McKechnie's heart and mind is the loss of his sister, Lisa who passed away 11 years ago in a tragic back yard pool accident at age 23. Since then the McKechnie family have been hosting charity baseball tournaments which continue to grow in popularity and participation, including 16 teams annually. “In the past, up to 31 teams have come out to play. Some of the teams are skilled competitors and others are still skilled but less competitive,” commented McKechnie. When asked what he missed most about his sister and what he guessed she would think about all the good the fundraisers have accomplished, McKechnie had this to say in an emotional tear filled chopped breath about the sibling he so loves, “ Mostly, I miss her smile. I think she's be proud and even more humbled, I think to be honest. There are a lot of people who remember Lisa, in fact Teacher, Linda McDougall taught Lisa in grade 8 and she is here today. I know for a fact that my sister would have played hockey if she were here today and would be proud to know the girl's hockey team got their jerseys. She'd be so proud of money raised here today.” And so echoed the sentiment of gratitude throughout the halls of Hyland Heights Elementary proving what hard work and determination can get accomplished in a community manner that Shelburnites can truly boast is unique, dedicated and proud.
