Suspicious man asks children about a “lost dog” in two separate communities

The Caledon and the Nottawasaga Detachments of the OPP are investigating similar occurrences involving males approaching children.

On October 29, at 3:50 p.m., a male driving a newer model Mercedes S600 with leather interior approached children in the area of Mount Hope Road and stated that he was looking for a German shepherd dog. The male driver appears to be in his late 40's, has a large salt and pepper beard and salt and pepper chin length hair parted in the centre. The male driver is approximately 6 foot tall. On the same day, in the Town of Tottenham, at 3:30 p.m., in the area of Dillane Street and Keogh Street, two children were approached by 2 occupants in a blue vehicle. The occupants asked the children if they had seen a lost German shepherd dog. In both cases, the children were unharmed and the vehicles left the area.

Police are requesting parents to speak to their children about “stranger danger” and to report anything that appears suspicious in nature. Children need to be reminded not to accept any candy, gifts or a ride from a stranger or from engaging in conversations with persons looking for directions or inquiring about a lost pet.

Police are asking anyone with information in relation to these incidents to please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  You can submit information online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.  Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display and you will remain anonymous.  Being anonymous, you will not testify in court and your information may lead to a cash reward of up to $2,000.

The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their personal safety, and that of children, at all times. Children should not be left unattended anywhere, for any length of time, when out in public. The OPP's website, www.opp.ca, contains a number of useful resources, tips and links.
