Bantams tie with Midland in late season game

With the final weekend of the regular season now behind them, the Shelburne Wolves  Bantam LL1 notched a single point on Saturday (Jan. 18) with a 1–1 tie with the squad from Midland.

Despite the even final result, Wolves left winger Fred Dickson said he thought the team was capable of a better performance.

“We didn't play good,” he said after Saturday's game. “We couldn't pass, we couldn't  skate, we weren't hitting.”

While his competitive nature means he was disappointed at not coming out with the win, Dickson said they can improve for their next outing against Elmvale.

“We need to pass better, shoot better, train more, hit more - do everything we didn't do today.”

On the good side, he said the team avoided spending time in the box, and “getting out of the dirty areas and avoiding penalties. We played really good defence and we kept them to the outside so they couldn't get shots.”

With the regular season over, the squad will enter a round-robin style playoffs.

“It was a tough game,” said coach Shawn Cavey. “We weren't moving our feet, we weren't hitting. We dump and chase and were weren't chasing – then you're in trouble. They're (Midland) a tough team. They don't score many goals and they don't let many goals in, and we had a whack of chances where we were really close, it just didn't connect.”

As for the Wolves defence, Cavey said the Midland team “didn't have a lot of chances.”

The Wolves managed to play a good defensive game that kept the Midland team out of the zone in the front of the net.

Minor league playoffs will get underway once the final few games shake out and the final standings are determined.
