Global Pet Foods hosts the ‘Show Us Your Heart’ campaign

Global Pet Foods are well known for charitable work and together with one of their suppliers, Hills Ideal Balance, Global proudly announce their 8th annual launch of  their ‘Show Us Your Heart' campaign making a difference to abandoned, homeless, and discarded animals.

The campaign runs the first two weeks of every February and Global Pet Foods and Hills Ideal Balance will  match the first dollar for every donation made in-store.

Since its inception, the Show Us Your Heart Campaign has raised over $570,000 where all proceeds went directly to over 120 pet rescue and animal shelters across Canada. Every Global Pet Foods location are responsible to choose which Charity the ‘Show Us Your Hear Campaign' will rally behind and Global Pet Foods in Shelburne has chosen to support  the Animal Alliance of Canada's Project Jessie, helping to save animals from euthanasia and laboratory experimentation.

Project Jessie was established in 1991 to help those animals who were labelled ‘unadoptable.' These animals became scheduled for euthanasia or they were destined to become specimens cruelly tested upon in laboratories. Of course money is involved as in the project's namesake, Jessie, a mild mannered, loyal pet relinquished to a pound during a family break up resulting in her being sold to a laboratory becoming yet another casualty to the selfishness of man discarding our loyal and loving friends like trash on garbage day. After not being able to save Jessie, who incidentally spent her remaining days being experimented on, Project Jessie was started in her honor and a vow was made to help prevent this from ever happening again.

Shelley Hawley-Yan is a local mono woman who has been involved with Project Jessie for twenty years and has saved and ‘re-homed' all kinds of critters and creatures in addition to dogs and cats.

“We've had birds, goats, bunnies, guinea pigs, even horses from time to time,” Hawley-Yan commented. “Being a non-profit organization, we depend on donations and also because we work from foster homes.”

Frustration ensues when certain regulations can make situations difficult in that Hawley-Yan is only allocated 3 dogs and 3 cats in her home at any time, making volunteer foster homes essential to the success of the program. When examining the reasons Project Jessie is important, Hawley-Yan, a Biochemist, explains, “ The Animals For Research Act is a bad piece of legislation. Within 72 hours of being placed in an agency, a research lab can purchase the animal for experimentation.  That's not enough time. As a Biochemist, I can tell you, it's bad science. There is no evidence the animal's reaction to a chemical will be similar to a humans.”

Long time Global Pet Foods employee, Marcia McFaul commented, “ People in the city often drive out to the country, see a farm and just leave their animals at the end of a driveway. I had a cat for eighteen years that my kids found in a dumpster as a kitten. So sad, but look how long I was able to love that cat!”

People call Global Pet Foods often for help with unwanted animals. Because Shelburne doesn't have its own Humane Society, occasionally Shelburne Police will help with dangerous dog situations, but not cats. And cats seem to be in ever great need.

Jaci Thomas has been the new owner of the Shelburne's Global Pet Foods since last April. “ I love people, I love animals and so this store was the perfect combination.” Thomas commented. “We think its important to support Project Jessie and we'd like people to come in and show their support for all rescued animals.”

Clearly there is more than love for these animals, as a very real dedication shines through. Make a donation, Shelburne and “Show Us Your Heart!”
