The Gardener’s Corner: ‘Kick Start Spring’

Are you tired of winter already, wish it were over?  Well, I have some dates to put on your calendar to get you motivated and thinking of spring.

Seedy Saturday will take place on Saturday, March 1 at the Utopia Hall, 8396 6th Line of Utopia.  Come early for at 9 am to savour a sunny-side-up breakfast and have first dibs at the seed swapping which is from 10–11. Make sure to label any seeds you bring for the swap with what's in the packet and growing conditions.

From 9 – 2 p.m. there will be exhibits, presentations, children's activities and refreshments. A worthwhile free admission event to attend.  For more information go to their website at www.utopiahall.ca or call 1 877-571-4769.

Canada Blooms takes place from March 14-23 once again at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.  The theme this year is ‘Wild'. For information on possible bus tours heading down, Hamilton Tours out of Barrie can be contacted at 905 775-9006 or by email at info@hamiltontoursltd.com

As we move into spring, the Peterborough Garden Show will run from April 11–13 at the Evinrude Centre at 911 Monaghan Rd. Admission is $7 and the hours on the 11th are 5 – 9 p.m., 10 – 6 on the 12th and 10-4 on the 13th. This show is said to rival Canada Blooms and considered even better by some.

Have I got your interest?  There's more, and right here in Innisfil. The Gilford and District Horticultural Society starts the 2014 season on March 10 with Lorraine Mennen from Pathways to Perennials speaking on ‘Colours in the Garden, Where and When to Use Them'. Meetings are held at the Churchill Community Centre, 6322 Yonge Street and start at 7:30 p.m. Their April 14 meeting will have Karl Kohnen presenting ‘Grasses for the Garden'. Everyone is invited to come to the meetings, membership is inexpensive and it's a great way to learn and be with other gardeners.

And to quote Mark Cullen, “Gardening is as much a sport as hunting or fishing. Maybe a more civilized one at that, after all we are not killing our play-things but rather planting and nurturing them, for the most part. And yes, at the end of the day, we can eat the spoils of our sport too. In this regard gardening is the ultimate outdoor sport. Gardeners need winter to recharge, like any other sport-people.

It is hard for the non-gardener to appreciate the creative juices that are invested in the efforts of gardening. It is, after all, not like we just wander out to the yard some Saturday morning and start digging. There is an enormous amount of planning that goes into this endeavour.”

During the cold months of winter is when gardeners do their best dreaming and planning, and when the garden shows and club meetings begin, it's a great way to kick start spring.
