Wolves Bantam LL1 team leading in final series

The Shelburne Wolves Bantam LL1 team is one point away from claiming the division championship after playing to a tie in the first game of their series against Wasaga Beach, then leaving the ice with a 3–2 win in game two.

The first game got underway at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne on Saturday, March 14.

There was no scoring in the first two periods as both squads played a stellar defensive game keeping attackers to the outside and away from the zone in front of the net.

The Wolves got on the scoreboard in the third period when Kyle Burke fired a bullet from the point that bounced off the Wasaga goalie and was batted into the net by Sawyer Kirsten.

The second goal came from Wolves forward Cole Timmins who let a shot go from just inside the blue line and found the opening through the crowd to the back.

The game went into a ten minute overtime period but neither team could score the winner and each team was awarded a single point for the tie.

The series will be won by the first team to reach four points.

“We really weren't skating that much in the first period,” Said Wolves goalie Joe Woollett. “We started getting better and the legs were moving faster, we just couldn't get a shot off.”

By the third period, the team turned it up a notch and came out at a faster pace.

“He told us it was a very important game, and we want to win that trophy, and take it to Buffalo, and win there too,” Woollett said of their coach Sean Cavey's words before heading out for the final 20 minutes. “A couple of our players were using a lot more muscle (in the third period) and they were hitting harder. They started skating up the ice more and getting shots away.”

The squad is slated to go to Buffalo, New York on March 21, to play in the Pepsi Cola tournament.

Game two of the series in Wasaga resulted in two points for the Wolves when they left the ice with a 3–2 win.

The Wolves were down 1–0 in the first period then came back when Cole Timmins scored in the second period.

Kyle Burke notched the second Shelburne goal in the second frame.

After a slow start in the third period, Sawyer Kirsten scored Shelburne's number three late in the frame.

The teams will meet up for game three in Wasaga on Monday, March 24.
