GMHL season ends with Bulls championship

The Bradford Bulls claimed the Greater Metro Hockey League Russell Cup championship with a 6–4 win over the defending champion Bradford Rattlers on Wednesday, March 26, at Bob Fallis arena in Bradford.

The best of five final series was tied at two, going into the final game after the Bulls came out on top in the first two games with the Rattlers responding in game three and four to tie the series and make the final game the only one that counted.

In the regular season, the two teams finished fourth and sixth in the standings.

The Bulls made the number four spot with a 32–10 record.

The Rattlers finished with a 3–10 record.

The playoffs had a few surprises when the Rattlers knocked out the first place Seguin Huskies in round three, and the Bulls did the same to the second place Temiscaming Titans, to set the stage for a local cross-town final series.

“I could not be more proud of this group,” said Bulls GM Mike Fish, “They put in the work and deserve to win it.” Fish continued to thank the town of Bradford for the amazing fan support, no matter which side of the sidewalk they were cheering for: “The amount of people filling the stands was incredible. The loudest cheering I have heard in two years here.”

Locally, the Shelburne Red Wings never got out of the starting gate after having a dismal season that saw the squad win only three games all season.

According the Red Wings website, the team is actively recruiting players for the 2014 / 2015 season despite earlier unconfirmed rumours that the team was considering relocating to another town.
