Yesterdays Home Furnishing: buying old vs. buying new

With modern tastes in furniture becoming collectible and eclectic there is a growing trend to find that antique piece of furniture you simply cannot live without.

Owners of Yesterdays Home Furnishings on Main St. in Shelburne, John Brech and wife Dale Funston, specialize in the very well made, the unusual, the collectible and even carry some modern great finds that have been re-purposed.

“I am the ‘wood guy' and Dale is the ‘dishes, cutlery and china' go to person,” Brech commented.

Brech has a few recommendations when it comes to young people purchasing furniture for the first time advising.

“Look for something that you won't have to repair in a few months or years. If you spend $200 for a quality item you can get your money back when you're sick of it,” he said.

Brech mentioned that the resale value of  most modern items is not worth the dollar value come time to resell, or the item is permanently broken pointing out that furniture made today just isn't made as well as it was years ago and people should look at antique furniture as an investment.

“Avoid the debt merry-go round. Buy two quality pieces at a time, pieces you can afford and build up from there. These antique items are still around because they were made so well,” commented Brech.

When at an estate sale Brech chooses his purchases carefully explaining, “Really all great stuff comes down to price and quality. A lot of modern stuff is just not worth the hauling. We get so many great pieces in here all the time, but you have to realize there is a really high turn- over also. That's why I will tell customers who missed out on an item they had their eye on to put it on the wish list – let me know to be on the look – out for a specific item and I'll probably find it.”

Brech jovially coins the phrase, “One low price takes it away!” Brech also sells on line and will deliver. The items found in the store come from all over Ontario, and Brech's customers come from all over the world thanks to the Internet.

Brech also recommends, “Instead of purchasing furniture that completely matches, like bedroom sets, mix and match, be different, be unique. Boring is out! Eclectic is in!”

Clearly passionate about antique furniture, this award winning merchandising display representative has worked for Johnson and Johnson, Honest Ed's and other famous names. Drive for finding the unusual, the unique, the irreplaceable, and the best made, combines Brech's passion with an educated professional eye.

Postman's Antiques also carry very different product from Yesterday's and owner, Diane Guyton once said, “If I came from what is known as the recyclable generation, I'd have to say today it's the disposable generation.”

Brech agreed with that statement further commenting the importance of craftsmanship making a huge difference and the disposable generation doesn't realize by the time they dispose of recently purchased furniture, they could have had quality, and been planning they're next purchase they would never have to dispose of. Breck refers to modern furniture as, “all show and no go!”
