March on, Meals on Wheels

Every March, the North American March for Meals on Wheels Campaign promotes the Meals on Wheels program generating awareness regarding the very real situation of senior hunger and the wonderful services available to help combat the problem.

Senior nutrition programs are able to provide invaluable services to the “experienced” citizens of our nation, with the help of a large number of volunteers. The March for Meals program values the volunteers who make the program possible, but also requires funding and support from local businesses to stay afloat.

Client Services Coordinator for Dufferin County Community Support Services, Kelly Welsh-Burns, identifies the rewards of becoming a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program commenting, “The best part of volunteering is the rewarding feeling that comes from giving back to the community. Clients are so thankful for the service and community relationships also bloom as a result of this worthwhile causes.”

At present, Shelburne can proudly boast having supported the Meals on Wheels program for 40 years providing approximately 50 meals each week.

Shelburne's Mayor, Ed Crewson and his wife, Wendy Crewson, have been delivering Meals on Wheels for at least 15 years and are two of the approximate 120 volunteers who participate in the program locally.

“Our dedicated volunteers are members of church clubs, service groups, the Masons, and the public. Basically we try anything to keep seniors in their home to prevent early admittance into long term care homes,” Welsh-Burns explained. “The meals provided are nutritious, consisting of soup, salad, meat, veggies, potatoes, even a cheese and cracker snack.”

Seniors have many options when taking advantage of the Meals on Wheels program including access to the frozen meal program as Welsh-Burns further explained, “There are both short term and long term options available in addition to the bonus feature of no delivery charges. The non-profit organization offer services across Dufferin County and at only $5.50 per meal, so this service is very affordable to seniors.”

Dufferin County Community Support Services have many programs to take advantage of such as the Adult Day program, Home Help, Respite, Home Maintenance, Transportation, Shelburne Congregate Dining, Foot Care Clinic, Friendly Visiting and both information and referral are free.
