Minor baseball ready to start season

It's one of those sports that signal that summer is finally hear.

The crack of the bat, and a cheer from the crowd is one of those summer sounds that is unmistakable – especially during week day evening games.

Shelburne Minor Baseball is putting together teams for the 2014 season with around 80 kids already signed up and eager to get out on the diamonds.

“We have t-ball, beginner mixed, and junior mixed divisions,” said club vice-president Larry MacDonald during registration day held at the Shelburne public library on April 26. “We also have a pick-up league for high school students. We play every Tuesday night between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.”

Games are played at the four diamonds adjacent to Hyland Park in Shelburne. The season gets underway on May 20, and runs through to August 23, when the league has a final tournament day to settle the season and see who comes out on top.

There is still time to join a team with sign up days being held at the library on Saturday, May 3, and Saturday, 10. For the little ones at the tyke level, t-ball is the perfect sport to learn the nuances and rules of the game and to learn some skill sets as well.

For the older kids, baseball has a long tradition of team work and blends team play with the individual effort of getting up to bat and relying on yourself and your skills to get to base. For more information on the League, you can visit them on Facebook under Shelburne Minor Baseball. There are still spots available on teams for the 2014 season.
