Dufferin County Museum & The CreativFestival 2014

The Dufferin County Museum attended the CreativFestival for Spring 2014 held at Mississauga's International Centre on April 25th–27th. Very involved in Fiber Arts, the Creative Festival was the ideal forum to promote a special book, The Quilts of Dufferin County by Shelagh Roberts with photographs by Pete Patterson.

“How can a community tell its stories?,” Nanci Malek, Marketing Promotional Co-ordinator for the Dufferin County Museum &Archives explains, “The Dufferin County Museum and Archives believes our quilt collection is the catalyst for the stories. In Pete Patterson's photos, the fabric, the color and the passion of making the functional art, truly comes alive. Shelagh Roberts' dedicated research carefully documents each quilt's physical description, who made the quilt, her role in her family and within the Dufferin community. Additional historical research on Dufferin's weavers, including photos and sewing items from the DCMA collection adds richness to the book which is a tribute not only to the art of quilting but also to our entire community.”

The Quilts of Dufferin County is a timeless keepsake and excellent historically, factually based gift available at both the Dufferin County Museum and Booklore in Orangeville. Retailed at only $40 plus HST, Malek reports 10 copies sold at the CeativFestival.

“The DCMA thoroughly enjoyed the CreativFestival. This was the perfect opportunity to promote the wonderful events, juried festivals and the Quilts of Dufferin County book. We feel a kindred spirit with crafters and with the quilting guilds so we felt that this festival was the best place to find like-minded folk who could appreciate what we are trying to do. The Festival had booths ranging from Quilters to hat makers, wool and sewing material booths and more bobbles and buttons than one could ever hope to see. The attendance was great and we felt we had accomplished wonderful networking," Malek commented.

Malek reminds the community to be aware of upcoming events, “On Sunday June 21st starting at 2 p.m, we celebrate 100 years of Corn Flower Glass with an exhibition in partnership with local artists entitled, Community Creates Cornflower,” continuing, “‘In Bloom' begins Saturday, June 21st starting at 1 p.m. Local floral stylists, enthusiasts and young artists will come together in the DCMA's juried show and sale. All floral arrangements will be for sale and those arrangements that have not been purchased will be donated to pre-selected local hospitals, retirement facilities and charities.” Those interested in submitting a floral arrangement can email info@dufferinmuseum.com or call 1-877-941-7787.

For those busy hands interested in Quilting, the Stitches Across Time Exhibition in November 2014 will celebrate the tradition and history of textile arts and invites submissions for a national juried exhibition.
