Senior Expo at Mel Lloyd Centre a huge success

MP David Tilson treated Shelburne's seniors to a Seniors Information Expo – an event co-sponsored by Tilson and the Centre Dufferin New Horizon's Club – at the Mel Lloyd Centre on April 24th.

The days discussions, from various keynote speakers, included topics of interest to seniors.

The first speaker, Patti Tardif, Manager of Dufferin County Community Support Services, provided a comprehensive overview of the local services seniors have access to. In her address entitled, ‘Bringing Care Home', Tardif enlightened and comforted audience members by arming them with the knowledge of choice, especially as it concerns end of life care.

‘Planning for the Unexpected', was the second topic of the day as guest Jason Todoroff, a barrister and solicitor with Shepherd, Osyany & King, discussed powers of attorney, explaining and outlining the importance of making a will, and why carefully selecting an executor of said will is imperative.

Local pharmacist, Sanjay Lekhi, was invited to speak on a very sensitive topic rarely addressed yet is an extremely important health issue facing most seniors, especially those taking medication. Appropriately titled, ‘Nature's Call is Above All', Lekhi delivered much needed information regarding constipation, different treatments choices, and health issues.

Dufferin County Museum & Archives curator and director, Wayne Townsend spoke on a wonderfully nostalgic topic, ‘Stories of Some Remarkable Dufferin County Seniors'. Townsend began his address with humor, saying, “Sitting and listening to everyone who spoke before me, I realized following health, death and constipation will be a tough act to follow, but I'll try!”

Townsend delighted with engaging tales. An extensive array of famous seniors and their stories can be found on line as members of the Dufferin County Museum.

MP David Tilson also had the insight and consideration to film the Expo for those who were unable to attend. Everyone in attendance was invited to a luncheon, generously catered by Egan Funeral Home, Baxter & Giles Chapter.

Tilson's motives for organizing this very unique and informative event, appreciated by those who attended, was made very clear, “People need to know this information and I thought filming it would be a great thing for those who can't make it here or can't leave their house. Everyone should have access to this kind of information,” Tilson compassionately and logically explained.

Note worthy are the many questions taken by each keynote speaker regarding the topics at hand. The Shelburne Seniors Information Expo was well received and appreciated by all, proving Tilson is in touch with the needs of the Shelburne community and surrounding area.
