Honouring Afghanistan VeteransIt was a sombre occasion on May 9th at Shelburne's Royal Canadian Legion 220 Branch where veterans gathered in a National Day of Honour conducting a Remembrance Ceremony for Veterans who fought in Afghanistan. With a call to attention and a lowering of the flag to half mast by Veteran Bill Hanna, expressions on the faces of those who attended during moments of silence told empathic stories unspoken. Steve Shamula, as the oldest Vet present had the honor of laying the wreathe, Flanders Fields was recited from memory by Veteran David Barr followed by the Lord's Prayer delivered by Pastor, Gord Horsely. President of the Legion Branch 220, Liz Whitten led the legion Oath, ‘We Will Remember Them'. Special guests included MPP Sylvia Jones, Shelburne's Mayor Ed Crewson and past president of the Legion, Carl Robertson. “It was an honour to join the veterans at the Shelburne Legion to mark the National Day of Honour to acknowledge and thank the service men and women who served in Afghanistan. It was particularly meaning full to me because we were honored to have a service man who was in Afghanistan join us: and to remember the sacrifice made by individuals and families dealing with loss and injuries, especially in our own country,” commented Jones. The ladies auxiliary then presented a wonderful luncheon and in keeping with their oath, Shelburne Veterans did remember Veterans who fought in Afghanistan and so much more. By Alex Sher |
