‘Gypsy’ a runaway success in Shelburne

The sounds of Stephen Sondheim fill the air when Arthur Laurent's“Gypsy” takes to the stage in Shelburne's Grace Tipping Theatre. The dancing is riotous, the joy infectious, and the music enthusiastic thanks to director Alison Port and Music Director Lorne Derraugh with a lively band whose talents multiply those of the cast.

Lively talents it is when darling Baby Louise (Kayla Dollimore) emerges as the sultry, sensuous Gypsy Rose (Melissa Worswick) midst an amazingly energetic chorus who storm the stage with incredible song and dance. The cast is electrifying, charged by the vibrant stage mother, Rose (Ann Johnston) struggling with a multitude of children underfoot and a chaotic theatre life. Choreographer (Kristen Gamache) has done wonders, and the theatre explodes with the talents of no less than seventeen songs and dances that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire evening. To the popular “May We Entertain You”, shared by the adorable Baby June (Lauren Davidson) and in her shadow, Baby Louise (Kayla Dolliimore), we can respond with a heartfelt “YES”.

The lovelorn and well-played Herbie (Ray Young) would wait for that YES for as long as it takes, even though it culminates in disaster. Likewise, heartstrings are tugged with the performance of the wistful Tulsa (Sheldon Peeters) when romance buds and the Dainty June blooms.

The show describes not just a story but an era. An intriguing setting changes with each scene as excellent musicians and cast merge vaudeville to burlesque, with a unique character. Costuming, as created by Port, Johnston, Joy Worswick and Kim Peeters becomes a kaleidoscope of color featuring lively Spanish Toreadorables, a trio of strippers (well-endowed in talent and so many more features that cannot be missed!) and a dancing cow, her barnyard full of rambunctious farmhand dancers.

A multitude of talents make this evening an astounding success, well deserving the enthusiastic standing ovation.

Stay tuned for more performances by LP Stage Productions. They are not to be missed! Gypsy closed June 1st, but LP will be back with Peter Pan Jr. in the fall, followed by Spamalot.
