The Student Art Show is hosted annually by DCMA assisted by Headwater Arts, and on June 15th awards were given to eight of the creative students and one teacher. June Sulley, senior art teacher at Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS) in Shelburne, expressed her gratitude to the organizers of the show for the opportunity it gives the students as she accepted the award for Visual Arts Program of the Year for the second year in a row for CDDHS. DCMA General Manager Darrell Keenie hosted the award ceremony, now in its 15th year showcasing the talent of high school youth, in grade 11 and 12 art classes from Dufferin County and the Headwaters area. This show and sale of original works, features the very best in visual art talent from Westside Secondary School in Orangeville, Mayfield Secondary School in Caledon, Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School in Caledon East, Humberview Secondary School in Bolton, Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, and Centre Dufferin District High School in Shelburne. Orangeville District Secondary School and Erin District High School have participated in the past and are expected to join the show again next year. Each school provides ten pieces of work, so this year there were 60 pieces of art in a wide variety of mediums on display in the museum silo gallery. This is an excellent opportunity for young artists to meet the challenge of completing gallery ready pieces for display and to have the prospect of selling their early works. Wayne Baguley, Past President of Headwaters Art, was passionate about encouraging young artists to “sell their art…and move on to new works.” The works are judged by a jury of three professional artists that vary from year to year. Shelburne senior art teacher, June Sulley says media that was submitted from CDDHS in 2014 included conte, digital painting, batik (painting using wax as a resist and dye,) acrylic painting, print making (etching,) a recycling pop can sculpture, tinware, and mixed media (feathers, beads, leather, silk.) Prizes on June 15th included the DCMA People's Choice Award ($100) to Juliet Rohlmann from CDDHS in Shelburne, for her work “Purple Forest.” The Headwaters Arts Award ($100) presented by Wayne Baguley on behalf of Royal LePage RCR Realty went to Samantha Hurst of CDDHS for “Self Portrait.” The Jefferson Mappin Award ($100) was won by Alissa Condotta, from Robert F. Hall Catholic School in Caledon East for “Unlock My Freedom.” The Hugh & Cheryl Russel Award ($100) went to Elizabeth Kean of Banting Memorial High School for “Tiger” and “Self Portrait.” The Stitches Across Time Award ($200) was given to Jesse Hill of Centre Dufferin District High School for “Identity” and to Alissa Morrison and Juliet Rohlmann for “Freedom.” Mayfield Secondary School's Parent's Recognition Award ($150) was awarded to Sachleane Smythe of Mayfield SS, for “3 Wise Monkeys.” Congratulations to all the young winners and participants who represent the next generation of artists in an area known to be rich with creative talent.
