Junior C Vets win final regular season home game

The Shelburne Junior C Vets rallied in the third period of Friday night's game against Oakville to leave the floor with a 9–5 win in their last home game of the regular season.

The first period saw both teams getting off to a slow start to end the frame tied at one. Todd Greer scored the only Shelburne goal to open the scoring for the Vets. Moving in the second period the game tipped slightly in Shelburne's favour when they outscored Oakville 3–2 to have a one goal lead going into the final frame.

Second period Shelburne goals came from Brett Snell, Zack Laform, and Tyler Shepherd. With a low score and a short period of time to settle the game, the Vets took it up a notch in the final frame and scored five unanswered goals to take the 9-5 win and leave the floor with two more in the points column for the season.

“We knew they (Oakville) had a short bench. We should have been running a lot hard and stronger in the first two periods,” said Vets coach Mark Early. “We told them to stop holding their sticks so tight – loosen it up a bit, and play the game they can. They were dropping a lot of balls and I think they were just too tight.”

The squad obviously took their coaches advice and the return for the third period had the Vets dominate the game for the duration. It was the Shelburne squad's final home game for the regular season.

They have one more road game against Halton Hills on July 2, before heading into the playoffs. It's too early to tell who they will meet in the first round. There is a tight race in the point standings so the last few games will make a difference when it comes to playoff off berths. This is a banner year for the Jr C Vets.

It is the first season since they started that they have ended the regular season on the plus side in the final record tally.

After the weekend, the Vets record is 8–6–1 – good for 17 points and a third place standing in the West division of the OJCLL.
