A graduation salutation

This is the time of year when students mark the milestone of graduation, as has been the tradition in schools since the universities of the 11th century. Whether it is from high school, elementary school, or kindergarten, parents shake their heads in disbelief at how far their children have come and how fast the years have flown. The student's achievements are most honoured, not by parties or prom dresses, but by their family's pride. And it is safe to say that Shelburne shares that pride for all their graduates.

At Centennial Hylands Elementary School (CHES) 48 students graduated from the grade eight classes of John Crowley and Christina Pilch. Karen Long, Centennial Hylands' Principal says, “The entire CHES Community wishes them the best.”

At Centre Dufferin District High School, commencement is in the fall. “Graduates have until the end of August to complete requirements,” noted Principal Pat Hamilton, “and award winners are not chosen until August.”

The first 41 graduates of the newly opened Glenbrook Elementary School celebrated their achievement last week. Alex Williams won the Citizenship Award and the Valedictorian Award. His mother, Nikki Williams says, “Before he started at Glenbrook, Alex set his goal for the year to win the Citizenship Award. I told him just to be himself and he would succeed. He helps out in so many ways in the community, as well as being on all committees at school. He is that loud, funny, everybody-likes sort of kid!” Alex shared the honour of Valedictorian with Nicole Ristic-Petrovic, daughter of Michelle Mayo. They proudly share their valedictorian speech from the school's inaugural year:

Alex: (Sound effect: “Cht”) This is your captain speaking… Actual factual, did you know that we are the first graduating grade 8 class of Glenbrook Elementary School?!?!

This year has been an amazing experience; from Island Lake, Ottawa and everything in between. There have been ups and downs, but we did it together! There have been so many memorable moments throughout the year and we can't wait for the next years that will be spent with all the wonderful students in this room!

Nicole: I can remember tons of wonderful moments about this year. Some of them on the other hand…not so much. I still can't believe Miley Cyrus cut off all her hair! But, we all supported each other in this very painful tragedy. Besides this, I would very proudly say I've had quite an amazing year. We all made new friends, and I got to find more about people I would usually not talk to.

Alex: Aha, ya Nicole that's right, When I was told that I had to move to Glenbrook, I was sad that I had to leave my old school and all my friends. In hindsight, I'm so happy I did! We have the best teachers and an amazing Principal. Did I mention the best students ever? The staff is always so nice and caring to all us students. I would also like to thank Mrs. Crago; lunch helping her class is lots of fun, they are all nice and well behaved, and I'm going to miss you Mrs. Crago!

Nicole: I agree with you Alex 110 per cent, so with that note from all the students, thank you teachers and staff who made this night happen. Also, big thanks to all other teachers and staff that help and work hard everyday to make this year so unforgettable. This just reminds me of the exciting staff–student hockey game that resulted in a tie. I had a blast being the goalie for the teachers, and I'm positive that everyone who participated and watched had a great laugh seeing players fall and Mr. Schooley's ‘wanna' be “dangles.” This is only one of the events that students keep bringing up, and one of things that makes our school so much fun. Even though we fall down, students, teachers and staff are always offering their open hand. On the other hand, there is still no excuse for Mr. Schooley's terrible hockey sense. I have made so many wonderful memories with the students of this school. We can all laugh, joke around and have so much fun while barely trying! Our student's stories are still being written. With so many years in front of us all, I am so grateful to have so many wonderful classmates, whether it be in Mr. Henry's or my own. I can connect with so many students and wish us all good luck in the high school years.

Alex: Ya that's true, but we can't do much about Mr.Schooley's “dangles”. Going into high school is going from being big fish in a small pond to being small fish in an ocean. But, we aren't going to let that stop us, because every person graduating in this room has potential. We are going to walk into high school with our heads held high and we are going to show everyone that we are Glenbrook! Although everyone is excited for high school, I'm sure we are all going to miss all the grade sevens that are always encouraging us and all of them so nice.

I would like to thank staff and students for joining us on this very special evening to celebrate our graduating class of 2014. Just think about it in four years we will all be graduating high school and off on our own adventures. Also, I would like to extend a huge thank you to our parents. Without all of you we would not be here today. So students make sure to give a big hug to all the people that have helped you over the years. They are the main reason we are as successful as we have been. We wish we could stand up here and talk to all of you all day because there are so many wonderful memories worth discussing. Unfortunately we are out of time, so once again thank you, and I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their evening.

Alex and Nicole: GO GRIZZLIES!!!

At Hyland Heights Elementary School, grade eight graduations took place on Wed, June 25th with 25 graduates. The all important, senior kindergarten graduation was on Thursday, June 26th with 38 students graduating to grade one. Graduates were from the classes of Mr. Palmer, Mrs. Richardson, and Mme Benoit.

The Hyland Heights'graduation theme this year was “From Shore to the Deep Blue Sea”.Principal, Denise Heaslip said, “The shore represented students perspective of their time in elementary school and the Deep Blue symbolized their next journey in life - secondary school. The gym was filled with decorations of sea creatures, beautiful murals of colour, and an entranceway that welcomed students with a beach theme. Hanging from the rafters in the gym, were some incredibly large and beautiful white birds with stretched out wings that appeared in flight.” The Hyland Heights' Valedictorian Award Recipient was Brennan Abel and the General Proficiency Award for highest academic average was presented to” Jacob Jansen.”

Principal Heaslip sends this message for the school's graduates: “Our wish for you in addition to achieving your personal best, is that each and every one of you leave Hyland Heights E.S. prepared to create a future filled with belief in yourself, an adventuresome spirit, the strength to stick with and act upon what you know is right, and most importantly - on a journey that you choose and create for yourself. Similar to the ‘Deep Blue'... not all journeys will be the same, nor should they be. This is the beauty of life and also of the Deep Blue! While we are sad to see you leave the halls of Hyland Heights and will miss your smiles and laughter, we look forward to hearing of your adventures and know that you will choose carefully and enjoy every minute of it. Just as we will often think of you, we hope that you might also sometimes think of us and our time together.”
