Terry Fox walk coming sooner than we think!

Local Shelburnite, Joan Wallace organizes the Terry Fox Run that takes place each year on September 14th. The Terry Fox Run is non-competitive, goes for 5k or 10k and participants can choose any mode of transportation they are comfortable with when attending.

“Walk, run, roller blade, skate board, bike, wheelchair, whatever you can do is worth doing!” Wallace explained. “Since 1991, our little community had raised almost $46,000. Perhaps one of the most important aspects that I personally like about this campaign is that proceeds go towards all cancers, not just one group.”

The Terry Fox Foundation has a single mission and that is to fund innovative Cancer Research. This very personal drive to end all cancers comes at a level of appreciation for life that fortunately most people have not experienced. At the age of twenty-three, Wallace, a new mother was told she had stage three Cancer and had to fight then and there. While her three month old newborn was in her mother's care during Wallace's treatments, husband, family and friends rallied at Wallace's side during her ordeal. Survivors of Cancer will all explain the paradox one faces during the fight against Cancer. Difficult to explain wanting to live while the silent killer attempts to devour every breath, every bit of strength and all will to live. Fortunately, for all who know and love Wallace the disease did not take her from her family and friends on this occasion, nor did it steal her away the second time she fought. Wallace fights to end all Cancers because she can, she's grateful to be alive.

“Terry Fox is such an inspiration and I was not well when he was running. I've lost friends far too young, like Jennifer Widbur only 40, my husband lost uncles to prostate cancer and it seems Cancer touches everyone you meet on the street. Everyone has been touched by it,” Wallace adds, “ My legacy, when they want to close the lid on me will be no flowers, just donate to the Terry Fox Foundation in the hopes of not just beating Cancer-GET RID OF IT!”

Completely a volunteer position, Wallace is dedicated and passionate and for good reason. That once twenty- three year old who, on one of the best days of her life, giving birth to her first son, also faced one of the worst days of her life getting the news she had full blown cancer, is presently surrounded by her loving family which includes grandchildren.

With September creeping up so quickly, Wallace hopes a friendly reminder will allow the community of Shelburne plenty of time to prepare to participate in the Terry Fox Run. While hero Terry Fox may not have won his fight against Cancer, he never stopped fighting, and neither will Wallace, Isabel and Jeff Holmes, Rotary Club members and Wallace's many family members and friends who volunteer, making each Terry Fox Run a success.
