Sports Hall of Fame inducts new members




The Shelburne and District Sports Hall of Fame inducted four new members to its ranks during a special ceremony held in conjunction with Canada Day festivities at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Tuesday, July 1.

The members were chosen based on nominations from the community and finalized by a selection committee.

Dale Lloyd: Figure Skating

Dale Lloyd was inducted for his achievements as a professional figure skater and coach.
Mr. Lloyd started skating at age three and joined the the Shelburne Figure Skating Club in 1963.
His dedication to the sport led him to also skate in clubs in Orangeville and Honeywood.
He became a professional when he joined the Ice Capades in 1979 and had a career that toured around North America.
Since then, he has remained in the sport in a coaching capacity.

Aaron Downey: Professional Hockey Player

Professional hockey player and Stanley Cup winner, Aaron Downey, is one of the region's most recognizable names.
He began his career playing minor hockey in Honeywood.
His career on the ice took him to the Collingwood Blues Junior A team, then on to two seasons with the Guelph Storm of the OHL.
His professional career - in which he is noted for being one of the few players who was never drafted -
saw him play with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, and the Detroit Red Wings.
He also played for several teams in the minor leagues.
Mr. Downey was a member of the Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings in the 2007 - 08 season.

Barry Trood: Lacrosse and Hockey

When it comes to lacrosse, few people could claim to know more about the sport than Barry Trood.
A former player who was on a Mann Cup winning team, he has had a life long involvement with the sport.
As a builder of the sport, he is a founder of the Caledon Junior C and Junior B Bandits, and a founder of the Shelburne Junior C Vets Lacrosse Club as well as a minor lacrosse coach.
When it comes to hockey, Mr. Trood has been an all around member of the Shelburne Senior AA Muskies as a play, a coach, and general manager.

Chris Pomeroy: Motocross

A life-long resident of Shelburne, Chris Pomeroy participated in motorcross for 35 years. A Canadian Junior National champion in 1988 / 1989, he captured eight Ontario Championships and three National Championship races.
He is currently coaching the next generation of motocross champions.
Although he is well known for his involvement in motor sports, Mr. Pomeroy is also respected for his involvement in local hockey - most notably as a player and coach with the Shelburne Senior AA Muskies.

These athletics have made substantial contributions to their sports and will continue to inspire younger athletes who dream of achieving a goal in athletics.
