Shelburne Residence Retirement Living receives top award

OLTCA hosted the 2014 Quality Innovation Forum at the Sheraton Center in Toronto. The OLTCA's Quality Forum was an opportunity for all members to hear about existing best practice programs that have tools, resources, policies and procedures that can be implemented across the sector to address quality of care. A very important concern in health care today.

Shelburne Residence Retirement Living and Long Term Care in Shelburne, participated in a pilot of a new app called HomeWeCare, launched by Colin Lebrun, President and CEO of On The Edge Technologies – a Richmond Hill based company. Colin was also runner up in the Richard Ivey Venture Forum 2014 with his app. Christine Ozimek, Chief Operating Officer for PLTC, parent company for Shelburne, presented with Colin the HomeWeCare application in the Innovators Den in Toronto to a full house. The HomeWeCare app won the Award for the “Best New LTC Product or Service of the Year”.

This award is judged by OLTCA active members as most likely to have a positive impact on long term care if more widely adopted. This award was one of five awarded this year in the sector and a significant accomplishment for Shelburne and On the Edge Technologies. HomeWeCare is a Smartphone App and computer site which links nurses' notes to family members who are signed up. It is available in all the app stores. It sends nursing notes, medication information, events and meal calendars to family member via their computer or their smart phone. This will address a certain level of transparency.

“The creation of increased transparency and the provider's willingness to do so is a powerful statement to the family and the public in general. This sets precedents that no other health sector can at this time replicate,” said Christine Ozimek.

“This is a peace of mind solution to help family members see how their loved ones are doing from any location they are in across the province, country or globe. Family can keep in touch without countless calls trying to reach someone at the home to see how mom or dad is doing,” adds Heidi Vanderhorst, General Manager for Shelburne.
