Pickin’ in the Park returns with ‘Trunk Sale’

Building on the success of last year's first Pickin' in the Park, Greg and Heather Holmes of Holmes Appliances and Music Shop have brought back the popular event for the weekend of July 24 – 27th at Fiddle Park in Shelburne. The inaugural event raised $5000 for enhancements to the park with a goal for a permanent structure to be built for future events. It also brought in additional business for the Shelburne Kinettes who were there serving up good food to hungry campers throughout the event.

Crowds were excellent last year with more than 175 campers in 85 trailers and motor homes arriving early on the Thursday morning. By night time musicians were taking to the stage, even though the planned events were not scheduled until Friday evening. That kind of enthusiasm is anticipated again, and Greg and Heather say, “We are expecting the attendance to be doubled this year, which will be great.”

Nearly 45 different groups of all ages entertained last year – most themselves campers, but many local talents joined to make it a real community event. Musicians included fiddlers, guitar and banjo players, drummers and keyboard players bringing their best country and old time fiddle tunes to the stage. The dance floor in front of the stage was well used throughout the weekend as guests waltzed and two stepped to the live bands. Cithara Guitars were special on-site guests and Shelburne steps dancers, from Chanda's School of dance, joined the fun for some clog, jigs and reels along with other young musicians from the area.

Greg and Heather brought the event to the town after they had attended similar events elsewhere and felt it was time Shelburne had its own weekend of music and camping. “We have wanted to do something in Fiddle Park since its development on 2nd Line,” said the Holmes', “it's a shame to see the park not being used, and with encouragement from fellow camping friends and musicians, we approached the Town for their approval. We were quite pleased with last year's attendance – campers and musicians travelled from all over Ontario for what turned out to be a very successful weekend, even with all the rain!”

The whole event is run by volunteers, with support from The Town of Shelburne, Shelburne Lions Club, and Holmes Appliances & Music Shop. Newly planned this year, is the addition of a ‘Trunk Sale' to the Trailer Trash Yard Sale.

“This year we are opening it up so the community can drive into the park with their ‘trunk sale' on Saturday morning,” says Heather. The cost will be $20 per vehicle, which also includes a day pass. The community is welcome to come in on Saturday morning to browse the Trailer Trash/Trunk sale from 9 – 11 a.m. free of charge.
