Juno Award Winners headline entertainment at Fair




Juno Award winning instrumental quartet Sisters Euclid will take to the Shelburne Fair stage on Saturday, September 13th at 3:30pm.The all male group composed of lead guitarist Kevin Breit, bassist Ian De Souza, drummer, Gary Taylor and keyboardist and accordion player Mark Lalama won the Best Instrumental award for Run Neil Run at the Juno's as well as a National Jazz Award for Electric Group of the year.
The music starts at noon on Saturday when fair goers will get a chance to see Sudbury based band Superstack's “soulful brand of classic vibe Rock,” featuring Scott Donnelly on lead guitar and vocals, Kyle Dreany on bass and backup vocals, and Dusty Steele on drums.
At 2 p.m. accomplished musician and singer Ed Roman takes centre stage with a broad range of music styles and original and inventive tunes. His most recent release Letters from High Latitudes in 2014 creates “an earthy, funky and magical mix of music.”
For the kids, the fair kicks off on Wednesday, September 10th with the Farmapalooza Agrication Centre for local schools. The Fair Ambassador Competition starts at 8:15 p.m. Friday the 12th; the 2013 Fair Ambassador Alice Whyte and Junior Ambassador Emma Holmes have had a busy year representing the Agricultural Society at various fairs and events across the region. Fair entries and exhibits will be ready for viewing by all the excited entrants both young and old at 6pm Friday night.
The popular bicycle race and tractor pull takes place for the junior set Saturday morning, and fun at the dog show begins at 1pm. Yarn Bomb a Tractor, supported by Woolly's of Shelburne, starts at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The Mansfield Centre will hold a children's workshop also starting at 1pm and a kite making workshop begins at 2 p.m. to accompany this year's theme “Kite Krazy.” At 3:30 p.m. kids can watch the 60 foot Octopus Kite demonstration followed by the Demolition Derby at 5 p.m. on Saturday and as always, the midway provides additional fun throughout the event.
Sunday morning, sidewalk chalk artist Dave Johnston, a master at his craft, will create a detailed, larger-than-life illustration. Many of Sidewalk Dave's creations include superheroes, famous paintings, and video game icons. The Antique and Classic Auto Show runs from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with the music of The Pedestrians on the main stage at 11 a.m. and Extreme Lawn Tractor Races at 1 p.m.
For the more mature fair goers there are, as mentioned, the bands, classic car show and hall exhibits, as well as auctions, antique demonstrations, horse and mule shows, cattle competitions, antique tractor parade, CMAC martial arts demonstration, the demolition derby and more. There is a lot new to see at the fair this yea, in both entertainment and renovations. A complete schedule of activities for the 147th annual Shelburne Fair running Sept 12–14 is listed below.
• Wednesday, September 10 2014: 9 a.m. – Agricultural Awareness featuring; Farmapalooza Agrication Centre at the Fair for local schools; 5 p.m. – Fair set up; volunteers welcome!
• Thursday, September 11 2014: 7 – 9 p.m. All entries accepted into barn (not the arena). Enter through Main Gate by the fire hall, (William St). The newly renovated exhibit hall will be straight ahead.
• Friday, September 12: 8 – 11 a.m. All entries accepted in barn (not the arena). Enter through Main Gate by the fire hall, (William St). The newly renovated exhibit hall will be straight ahead; 6 p.m. – Exhibit Hall opens. Snacks (Woolwich cheese, cider, crackers); 7 p.m. – Lamb Carcass Auction, Great Pumpkin Auction, Cake Auction; 8 p.m. – official Fair opening, sponsors swards; 8:15 p.m. – Ambassador Competition
• Saturday, September 13: 9 a.m. Horse Show; 9:45 a.m. Bicycle Race (register by show barn: 9:30 a.m.); 10 a.m. Exhibition Hall opens; Yarn Bomb A Tractor begins; 10:30 a.m. Heavy Horse and Mule Show; 11:30 a.m. children's tractor pull, Shelburne Open 4–H Dairy Show; 12 p.m. antique equipment demonstration, silent auction begins (fair building); music “Superstack” (main stage); 1 p.m. Shelburne Open 4–H Dairy Show; Dog show (tent), Mansfield Centre kids workshop; 1:30 p.m. Dance Fuel (main stage); 2 p.m. kite making workshop (kids), music: Ed Roman (main stage); 3 p.m. Toms Martial Arts Demo; 3:30 p.m. 60ft Octopus kite demo, music “Sisters Euclid”; 4 p.m. exhibit food released; 5 p.m. Demolition Derby, (1) Bicycle Draw + (30) Kites Draw (Derby Pit), -Silent Auction Ends (pick up and pay).
•Sunday, September 14: 9 a.m. beef cattle must be on the grounds; 10 a.m. Exhibit Hall opens, lawn tractor races, Yarn Bomb a Tractor, 4–H Invitational Beef Calf Club Show, 4–H Sheep Show; 11 a.m. Classic Car Show, Chalk Master Dave, live music (Main Stage) “The Pedestrian's”; 11:30 a.m. Baby Show (tent); 1 p.m. Charolais Show, Horse pulling Competition, All Beef Show, CMAC martial arts (main stage); 1:30 p.m. - Turn it Out dance demonstration (main stage); 2 p.m. Antique Tractor Parade, Car Show Awards; 3 p.m. (1) Bicycle Draw+ (30) Kites Draw (stage), sheep shearing show; 3:30 p.m. hall exhibits released.
