The Baha–Tee Charity Golf Fundraiser – you too can make a difference

Last year, the Shelburne Free Press had the absolute honour of introducing three locally raised young women who have surpassed themselves in all that is good. That being said, Shelburne is once again put on the map across the world, finding itself mentioned in Tanzania, Africa where our three local heroines, representing their communities which include Primrose, have continued on their quest to help others as their Bahati Project continues to positively impact the lives of young Africans.
The Bahati Project, spearheaded by Anne-Marie Montgomery, sisters, Jenn and Megan Kelk raise funds to support three previously existing non-profit projects, a pre-primary school in MeruView for children who cannot afford education themselves, Pippi House, a safe house for girls that have been taken off the streets and Newlands Orphanage, an orphanage for young children.
An ambitious task by any means, and if raising money wasn't doing enough, these three brave girls travel to these far away places to personally volunteer their time, deliver much needed essentials and share their skills as teachers, mentors and ultimately friends.
And now all of Dufferin County can contribute to their goal to raise $5000 by taking part in their Charity fundraiser, The Baha-Tee Golf Tournament to be held at Shelburne Golf and Country Club on September 20th. The cost is $120 per golfer and that price includes 18 holes, Cart, steak dinner, raffle prizes, contests and prize for the winning foursome. Note: $50 will buy that excellent steak dinner if you want to contribute but are not necessarily interested in playing golf.
“We'd like to get as many people out to the tournament as possible because we'd love to achieve our goal of reaching $5000,” commented Montgomery, “People can register via Paypal through our email and we'd love it if people registered in advance. We're hoping for 100 people.”
Should the community help the Bahati Project reach their goal, the money will go towards essentials like bedding, the simple things we take for granted in Canada, and also towards Pippi House expanding in order to take in more girls.
When asked where the passion comes from to help people so far away, Montgomery reflectively responded, “ People here in Canada have so much. When travelling, I met the people and fell in love with the culture. We've helped out here in Canada as well with Food Drives, but people in Tanzania aren't able to help themselves as a people. There is just too much poverty.”
Admittedly all three young woman would rather the ability to help all year round, but with work and school, they raise money throughout the year and as two of the members are teachers, travel when they can in the summer during break.
“Our goal is to help the girls of Pippi House achieve their goals. They would rather have an education, learn to read, and they know that life skills combined with education can help them to achieve whatever profession they had in mind for themselves,” explained Jenna Elk, “We want to help them know they are not only surviving, they are thriving!”
At a cost of $12,000 to build a well, the Bahati Project definitely has their work cut out for them, but they are not alone.
“We get a lot of support from family and friends and Primrose Elementary have been very helpful too,” commented Kelk.
It is with great hope, much determination and hard work that the Bahati Project invites as many as possible to take part in the Baha-Tee Golf Tournament and fund raising charity event, helping them change our world for the better!
