Fall Fair a success, despite the rainPresident of the Shelburne District Agricultural Society, Bruce Peterson sends big thanks to everyone who made the 147th Shelburne & District Fall Fair a success. “Thanks for everyone's dedication with the new format,” he said, “despite the weather on Saturday we still managed to have a variety of events for all ages.” The only event that had to be cancelled was the horse show Saturday morning due to the weather and safety of the horses. “As my first year as President,” said Bruce Peterson, “I received many comments on our new exhibit hall – this makes all the preparation many people did ahead of time satisfying. We will start the planning for next year's fair to continue to offer our community a great place for family and friends. Big thanks to the board and the many volunteers.” The newly crowned Ambassadors for the Shelburne & District Fall Fair are Jade Fleming as Senior Ambassador and Allisha Litt as Junior Ambassador. The competition was held on Friday night beginning at 8pm, and committee member Whitney Hofman reports that dignitaries were on hand to bringing greetings. Warden Bill Hill opened the 147th Fall Fair, MPP Sylvia Jones and Mayor Ed Crewson both brought greetings as did Fair President Bruce Peterson. Paula Cameron, a Shelburne Fall Fair past Ambassador and Jennifer Crewson from Crewson Insurance, were the judges for the competition. The evening finished with outgoing 2014 Fair Ambassador Alice Whyte receiving a $1,000 bursary towards her post secondary education. The Ambassador Committee of Jasmine McCabe, Aaron Whyte, Whitney Hofman and Nikki Smith “thank the many sponsors, countless volunteers and the Shelburne Agricultural Society for their assistance and sponsorship.” Kelly Montgomery Shelburne Fair Homecraft President proudly presented the wonderful work of local participants in the newly renovated exhibit barn at the Fair Grounds. The change of venue from the arena brought a new charm and warmth to the displays despite the drizzle that fell on Saturday. After visiting a lot of fairs in the district, Kelly says she can honestly say that, “Shelburne has one of the best displays of Homecrafts. “Everyone has worked very hard this year to bring Shelburne and surrounding townships a great fall fair.” There were many new initiatives to consolidate and condense the fair, set in motion by the shrinking grounds' space. The Fair Board decided to make a move to become self sufficient and make the grounds accessible to other groups and events. The exhibit barn upgrades are Phase A of a long list of renovations that will take place leading up to the Shelburne District Agricultural Society's sesquicentennial in 2017. By Marni Walsh |
