A Veteran Died TodayDear editor: On September 1, 2014, my uncle Jim McCullough died at the age of 91. He was incredible, not only because he was my uncle but also because he was a veteran. He fought in World War II with the Queen's Own Rifles. He, as well as the other men and women, fought so that we could all enjoy the freedoms that were being taken away from so many. A poem was read at his funeral called “A Veteran Died Today”. The original from Larry Vaincourt is called “A Soldier Died Today”. It is a poem that should be read by all. It can be seen at www.vaincourt.homestead.com It reads, in part: “He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin. But his presence should remind us we may need his likes again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start. If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say, Our country is in mourning, for a veteran died today.” I just felt that you should know that a veteran died September 1.
