If you want to keep busy and informed, the Shelburne Public Library has a full schedule of events and programs for everyone – from toddlers to seniors.
On Feb. 9, author Alice Porter will be at the library for the launch of her book. Ms. Porter’s autobiography titled, “A Remarkable Life” follows her life from growing up on a farm just outside of Shelburne to studying to become a nurse, then serving for 36 years as a missionary nurse in India.
After the book launch, there will be an elegant afternoon tea to celebrate the event.
Money from book sales will be donated to the Shepherds Cupboard Food Bank in Shelburne.
The book launch will get underway at 2 p.m.
March Break at the library will provide a special time for kids when they are out of school and looking for something to do.
“We have three performers for March Break,” explained Shelburne Public Library CEO Rose Dotten. “We have The Birds of Prey, and they will be coming to the library. They’ll talk about the habits of the birds. The next day, we have Fireside Munsch which is three individuals doing a take on Robert Muhsch’s four different stories. We will have comic juggler Craig on the following day.”
The Birds of Prey will be at the library on Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m.
The Fireside Munsch will take place at Grace Tipling Hall at the Shelburne Town Hall on Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m.
Comic Juggler Craig will also be at Grace Tipling Hall on Thursday, March 13.
Tickets for these events are $4 each, or you can attend all three events for $10.
If you’re a senior who is finding technology is moving faster than you can stay current with, there are tech tutors at the library every week.
The tutors themselves are seniors, however they happen to have a very good grasp of current technology that seniors may want to use.
“We have three instructors,” Ms. Dotten explained. “Our tech tutors are very well accomplished in understanding how seniors learn. They can also explain technical problems you may have, and they will try to identify those.”
iPads will be available in case a visiting senior doesn’t own one.
Tech tutors are at the library on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
For those that like to be creative while meeting new friends as well as those who also enjoy crafting, the Tuesday afternoon Crafting Club meets from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
You can bring your crocheting, knitting, sketching, or any other project you are working on.
If you like growing things in your backyard, you will enjoy Seedy Saturday.
“Seedy Saturday is a great day and very popular,” said Jade Wyse, technical services librarian. “We’re going to launch our seed library for 2025. In our seed library, we have a collection of seeds from flowers, herbs, and vegetables that are largely donated by the community. Community members can borrow seeds from that collection for the 2025 growing season.”
You can be a part of the entire process by bringing seeds from what you grow back to the library for others to use next year.
“There’s no obligation to return seeds, but we do welcome the return of seeds at harvest time, you can donate them back,” Ms. Wyse said. “We do have a few community partners coming in.”
Seedy Saturday will take place on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
If your kids enjoy Legos, the Wednesday afternoon Lego Club is a very popular event that is fun and creative.
The Lego Club takes place from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you can’t make it to the library, you can still check out a book by visiting the Shelburne Foodland. The Shelburne Public Library has placed an automatic book dispenser kiosk in the store.
If you have a library card, you can visit the kiosk and check out a book which will automatically be linked to your library card.
The Shelburne Public Library is a busy place that provides the opportunity to learn, engage, and have some fun.
