Shelburne Ethnic Group donates $2,000 and 600 reusable bags to food bank

The Shelburne Ethnic Group organized a community fundraiser in support of the Shelburne Cupboard Food Bank and raised $2,000 on Aug. 17 at Grace Tipling Hall. Over 600 reusable grocery bags were also collected to aid local families.

The donated funds were used to purchase essential grocery items requested directly by the food bank, ensuring families in need receive exactly what they need most.

The fundraising event at Grace Tipling Hall, Bollywood Karaoke Evening, drew a crowd of more than 100 people and featured four local performers before opening the stage for an open mic session with audience members.

Alongside the fundraiser, the group launched a reusable grocery bag drive to further support the food bank's operations. These bags play a crucial role in helping families carry food supplies with ease.

The reusable bag drive is ongoing, and community members can still contribute by dropping off bags at Mexcellent Burritos in Shelburne, where they will also receive up to 20 per cent off their purchase as a thank-you for their support.

“This initiative really showed the power of community coming together for a good cause,” said Shelburne Ethnic Group President Ankit Thakkar. “We are grateful to everyone who donated, attended, and volunteered to make a difference for families who rely on the food bank.”

The event was made possible thanks to the Shelburne Ethnic Group's committee members and youth volunteers.

The Shelburne Ethnic Group has been active in fostering cultural exchange and community support in the region, and organizers say they plan to continue initiatives that bring people together while addressing local needs.
