The community once again came together in support of cancer research as the annual Terry Fox Run returned to Natasha Paterson Park on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Participants could walk or run in support of the Terry Fox Foundation and its ongoing efforts to fund cancer research.

Organizer Taylor Wallace said the event was once again successful, with Shelburne continuing its tradition of raising around $10,000 annually for the Terry Fox Foundation.

“It went absolutely great, we’re very successful,” Wallace said. “Every year is about $10,000, and I think that that is a great milestone for Shelburne to reach every year. We’re still just a small community, but it’s so nice that everybody comes together.”

With the most recent count, the fundraising total sits at $10,989, though more may be counted in the coming days.

Rather than requiring participants to complete a set distance, the Shelburne event was designed to be accessible to residents of different ages and abilities. Participants could complete the full route or simply walk laps around the park’s track while supporting the cause.

“The Terry Fox Walk isn’t about the run itself,” Wallace said. “It’s about raising money for cancer research. I’m just happy if people come out and say hi and join us. And if they want to donate, great, or purchase tickets for the raffle. Even if you can’t walk it, that’s why we do it at the track, so that there’s more opportunity for people to not have to feel like they have to do the full 5K, but they can walk two laps on the track if they want, or however they want to do it.”

Among those who came out were members of the Shelburne and District Fire Department, who participated while wearing their firefighting gear.

The run has a strong history in Shelburne, and the community reached a significant fundraising milestone in 2025. Over 35 years of local Terry Fox Runs, Shelburne surpassed $100,000 raised for cancer research and received both a Terry Fox Milestone Award and Legacy Award recognizing its fundraising efforts and longstanding participation.

Local businesses also played an important role in making this year’s event possible. Wallace expressed her gratitude to the residents, businesses, volunteers and participants who continue to support the fundraiser year after year.

“I want to thank three very important places, which are Ice River Springs, Shelburne No Frills and then also Tim Hortons in Shelburne,” Wallace said. “I have always been so grateful for their donation of coffee, chocolate, snacks and water. We also want to thank all those small businesses that donate their prizes and their raffles. The raffle is a great way for us to make a little bit extra, and it really does show how big and amazing our community is.

Wallace added, “Even though we’re just tiny and little, it does show how big we are in our hearts.”

Donations to the Shelburne Terry Fox Run can continue to be made through the Shelburne Terry Fox Run fundraising page.
