Fighter loses rematch at Hershey Centre

Local boxer Jay Alexander lost in a unanimous decision to opponent Tim Cronin Saturday (Nov. 15) night at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre.
It was a rematch with the two fighters first meeting up at the same venue in a four round bout on May 3.
That bout ended with a unanimous decision for Cronin and after a closely matched fight, a re-match was set up for the November card.
Prior to the fight, Alexander said he was ready and going to change up his strategy going into the re-match and “go for the body.”
“It was close. The judges were tough,” Alexander said after the bout. “Again, one judge gave all four rounds to him (Cronin). I went to the body. The first two rounds went really well.”
Cronin went for a defensive posturing backing out and going on the ropes forcing Alexander to keep moving forward to engage his opponent.
“I was chasing him a lot,” Alexander said. “I thought it was pretty even in the first two rounds. I wasn’t dusting him but I felt good about it.”
In the end the judges awarded the bout to Cronin on points.
Despite the loss, Alexander said he left the ring with good feeling about the four rounds.
“I didn’t get knocked out and I didn’t get destroyed. It was a good night.”
It’s only been a few days, but he said he will now look at changing his strategy again.
In the light-heavyweight class, most fighter come in over the six foot mark and that couple of inches can make a difference.
Alexander said is now considering dropping down to the 165-168 lb class to even things out a bit for future fights.
Back in training, he shrugged of the loss as part of doing business in the ring.
“I’ll continue on and keep moving forward.”
