Going the extra mile – Dufferin Oaks Craft Sale

December 10, 2014   ·   0 Comments

It’s no secret to the community of Shelburne that our seniors are revered, valued, and loved. The Palliative Care Team of Nurses at Dufferin Oaks feel the same way, as they held what they hope will be the first annual craft show, raising money for specialty items for our seniors. The event was held on Saturday, December 6th and was a huge success.
Money raised goes towards further education of staff in palliative care, cozy comfort gowns, bedding supplies and for the palliative residents and their families. Easter Bake sales, Fall farmer’s Market sales, and other bake sales are essential money raisers as some of the money raised in these events went towards the purchase of reclining chairs that convert to beds, allowing comfort to family members who need to stay close to loved ones in their time of need.
This Christmas event’s monies raised will go towards what Dufferin Oaks Palliative Care Nurse, Rebecca Hall refers to as an exciting initiative, that being Dufferin Oaks becoming a Music and Memory Certified Home. Music has long been known for its healing powers, ability to provide comfort and personalized playlists. Studies indicate positive results for those suffering from loneliness, anxiety, boredom, behavioural issues, as well as stimulating memory recall even in dementia and Alzheimer patients.
The craft sales vendors are staff, family and friends of staff and is run by volunteers, all taking the time to go above and beyond for our seniors. Shelburne is a wonderful place, and not just at Christmas as these palliative care nurses care all year long.
