AJ Cavey, owner of Cobwebs and Caviar is set to celebrate ‘Worldwide Quilting Day’, this Saturday, March 21st, by supporting Quilts of Valour Dufferin, and intends to ‘Wrap The World In Stars’.
“We are encouraging people to make a 12” blocks (12-1/2” with seam allowances), using either the store pattern – pattern available in the shop, via e-mail cobwebsandcaviar@gmail.com, or at our website cobwebsandcaviar.com – or your own favourite star block pattern, in any colours. Bring the block into the shop, get your photo taken with the block and uploaded with your comments to the contest site, www.worldwidequiltday.com/starblockcontest, and you have a chance to win a sewing machine and a $500 shopping spree,” Cavey told the Free Press. “Plus, your name will go into a draw at the shop for a metre of fabric. And, if you’re willing to donate your block, Cobwebs will make up quilt tops from all the blocks received and donate them to the Quilts of Valour – Dufferin group. Cobwebs will also donate backing and batting for one quilt top as well. The contest runs from March 21 to April 21, and you can enter as often as you want, with a new star block each time.”
Worldwide Quilting Day is a chance for people around the globe to celebrate the art of quilt making. Locally, our Veterans will also benefit with the quilts that will be produced by the generosity of the quilting community in Shelburne and area.
“There will be draw prizes, a sale or two, nibblies, giggles and a great ‘Wall Hanging Pattern’,” Cavey said of the March 21st event. “And brownie points if you bring in your Star Block on March 21st for the Challenge, you have a chance to win a ticket to Notion Commotion!”
About the local chapter of Quilts of Valour:
Quilts of Valour Dufferin is run by a group of volunteers (Founder Judy MacLeod and member Penny Squirrell). The group makes quilts for local Veterans using their own time and materials, and meets once a month at the Shelburne Legion in the Museum Room (complete with pot luck luncheon) to work together, as a collective.
“The quilts we make don’t need to follow a specific pattern, however most of our quilts are masculine, as many local Veterans are men,” said MacLeod.
So far, the Dufferin QOV has distributed 13 throw size quilts, and there are several more waiting to be distributed – including two to female veterans.
QOV is always looking for donations of cash, fabric, completed blocks or tops. Sheets, to create backings, are also needed.
Even more importantly, the group is looking for quilters, and welcomes anyone, of any quilting ability to inquire for more details.
“We will even teach you to sew,” said MacLeod.
