Shelburne Library news

April 15, 2015   ·   0 Comments

Lots of excitement this week as we continue with the “Great Move”. You will find the DVDs in an attractive space on the east side of the library and we have moved the Large Print and Christian Fiction to those areas as well. We have had great feedback as there is such lovely light coming in and we have used lower shelves which make them much more accessible. And just think, as you come in, one of us will be happy to guide you to the new space…
A final touch when this is all done, will be large, attractive signs in all areas to simplify the location of the resources. And, perhaps a little party to celebrate all these changes!
Technology excitement!!!
We have just formed a partnership with the Upper Grand District School Board which should have a great impact on our youngsters. We will be receiving 5 of the Chrome books which are used in the schools. Students of the UGDSB will be able to access the online resources that the Board provides within our space after school hours to complete their homework. In particular, we are all excited to provide this opportunity for students who may not have a computer or Internet in their homes.
This falls right in line with our technology plans as we will be providing quite a large selection of magazines online that can be accessed in the library. We will provide several iPads for patrons to borrow and use in our soon to be “developed“ seating area around one of our lovely fireplaces. As I mentioned last week, these magazines can also be borrowed anytime any place through our 24/7 access from our library home page www.shelburnelibrary.ca. In conjunction with all this, we will be working on our website to make it even more intuitive and user friendly.
I do hope you are as excited as we are with these plans… it will still take some time to get everything in place so we do appreciate your patience and support.
Children and Teens Scene programs
Our regular times:
Friday at 10:30 a.m. for the Children’s’ Story time and this week, the theme is the Farm.
The Teen Scene (Thursday at 6 p.m.) will be highlighting another craft session. So be prepared to be creative… actually, we make it easy for you by presenting models to inspire you. You should see the lovely bookmarks and phone cases made out of duct tape. Any teen would be proud to carry their phone in one of these.
• Library Literary Event: June 28th at 2 p.m. – British Home Children in Canada
We have the date! Author, Lori Oschefski will be talking about her research and her new book, Bleating of the Lambs to be released June 13, 2015. She will be joined by local resident, Dallas Boudreau, in this presentation. I know this is a topic of great interest and look forward to seeing you all there. Later on in May, we will have tickets available. These are free, but it helps with our planning to know how many folks are coming.
New Books: Just remember we have many new books on order so watch for those new titles. Just a note about one of the new books on the list, The little old lady strikes again. If you haven’t read, The little old lady who broke all the rules, then do read it first. They are hilarious and quite entertaining reading. And then, of course, there is, The 100- year-old man who climbed out the window and disappeared. They are a little different but lots of fun.
Fiction:
The Death season by Kate Ellis
Buried secrets by Irene Hannon
The African equation by Yasmina Khadra
The Little old lady strikes again by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg
Pyramid by David Gibbins
Angels walking by Karen Kingsbury
Chasing sunsets by Karen Kingsbury
Non fiction:
Boy on ice by John Branch
