Dissolve the OMB!

April 23, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Regarding MPP Klees and his Preserving Existing Communities Act, if Mr. Klees is serious about correcting what he perceives as imbalances in Ontario’s regulatory regime that negatively impact communities, he should advocate for the dissolution of the Ontario Municipal Board.
This authority, unique to North America, has done more to interfere with healthy, balanced growth in communities than any other act of the provincial government, certainly in my lifetime (that’s about 50 years!).  No government in power will dissolve this animal. It is just too convenient an invention for forcing unwelcome decisions on communities – Holland Marsh Peaker Plant and King City “Big Pipe” decisions, not to mention several unwelcome OMB appeals by developers currently scheduled or awaiting a date.
The Places to Grow Act and the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (and Klees aptly states), not to mention the Moraine and Greenbelt legislation, would co-exist just fine thank-you very much if the provincial government would get out of the business of interfering in local council decisions altogether.
Perhaps there is an election in the wind?
