Junior C Vets squeezed out in home game

June 4, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The Shelburne Junior C Vets played to a 3–3 tie in the first period of Friday night’s home game against the Fergus Thistles but after giving up two unanswered goals in the second period the Vets had to settle for a 6–4 loss.
Shelburne first period goals came from Ty McCallum, Connor Early, and Charlie McCannell.
The Vets played a good second frame but just couldn’t score and gave up two goals that eventually cost them the game.
“The first period, we were fired up for the game,” said Vets player Kyle Stavely. “Defensively they were throwing guys too low on us. In the second period we went to man-on-man defence. From there we went to a zone defence and adjusted the best way we could. They got six goals in the game so that’s not too bad.”
The Vets scored a final goal in the third period from McCannell but were matched by another Fergus goal and had to settle for the loss.
They had good success the previous week winning back to back games over Oakville and Mimico but taking a Sunday (May 24) loss to Wilmot.
“We came out strong, we could have stepped out a little more,” said Vets goalie Rhett Fleming. “We just weren’t flying in the second period. We came out flat. We’re not a second period team. We had some good games last week – a tough one against Wilmot. We thought we’d come out for an eight point weekend but we just didn’t get it done tonight.”
It was a tough game with Shelburne taking 14 minutes in minor penalties and Fergus also spending 14 minutes in the box on minors.
There was a lot of smaller battles going on out on the floor with player hacking it out for positions in front of the net.
The loss gave the Vets a 3–4 record after the weekend.
Wilmot is tied with Six Nations in the West division of the OJCLL with both teams going undefeated after seven games.
Over all, Clarington of the East division, is out in front with 16 points and an undefeated season after eight games.
The Vets will be in Mimico on Friday, June 12 to take on the Mountaineers.
They will return to their home arena at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Sunday, June 14, to host Clarington.
Game time is 7 p.m.
