Dufferin County Museum and Archives presents the OPP Exhibit “Arresting Images” from July 5th to September 6th in the Silo Gallery. This special travelling exhibition features mug shots from between 1886 – 1908 documenting historic encounters between the police and accused criminals. Pictured here is Lillie Williams (alias Harrington), a housekeeper, who was arrested on “suspicion” of an “unidentified crime” on August 11, 1901. Also on display will be several artifacts and anecdotes from the Dufferin County Jail, known by the inmates as “Castle Sutherland”after the first keeper of the prison, Warden Sutherland. The old jail is now the Dufferin County Court House and County Offices. Opening day, there will be family activities including finger printing, a mug shot photo booth, facial recognition activities and even a jail cell. The travelling display includes 100 mug shots from OPP archives. The DCMA Curator says that “travelling exhibits keep what the museum offers fresh and provide local visitors with learning opportunities they might not get otherwise.”
