Vets lose but battle to the end with Warriors

The Shelburne Junior C Vets knew they were up against a tough opponent when the Six Nations Warriors came to the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday, June 19.
The Warriors are undefeated this season after 13 games.
Friday’s night game was a bad one for the Vets who allowed 27 goals against and scored six against their opponents.
“We knew they were going to be good,” said Vets’ Charlie McCannell. “The biggest thing tonight was just not giving up and playing a full three periods. I think we did that for the most part. We kept plugging away for loose balls. We’re not going to hang out heads because we didn’t try.”
Six Nations scored eight goals in the first period before the Vets even got on the board with a goal from Kyle Stavely.
Twelve more goals followed in the second period.
“That 8–0 start really tired us out, we just couldn’t recover,” said Shelburne’s Connor Early. “It was pretty much a constant battle from the first couple of seconds.”
Despite the loss the Vets will put it behind them and get on with the next game.
“Never hang your head,” Early said. “Always keep your head up and play the game we know we can play even if we’re down 20.”
With the end of the regular season only a couple of weeks away and look back at some statistics has got to have fans wondering exactly what is going on in this League.
The Warriors have averaged 18 goals per game in an undefeated season and Friday night’s match wasn’t the first time they have played a decidedly lop-sided game. On May 30, the scored 34 goals against Mimico.
The Warriors have averaged six goals against this season.
Compare that with the Clarington Shamrox of the East division who are also undefeated – although their goals for average is only 12 goals per game – a lot more realistic.
How can a team that so dominates a league in scoring be considered competitive? Every league is going to have teams that do better and rise to the top but when you’ve got one team that is so dominate you’ve got to wonder if they simply don’t belong in this League.
The Vets had another loss the next night (June 20) when they travelled to Fergus to take on the Thistles. This time the score was a lot closer.
The Shelburne squad ran into trouble in the first period when they gave up three unanswered goals but battled back in the second scoring three to make it a 5–3 game going into the final period.
The teams tied the scoring in the third period at two each, and the Fergus team left with a 7–5 win.
The Vets will be back at their home arena in Shelburne this Friday, June 26, when they will host the Wilmot Wild.
Game time is 8 p.m.
