Still a peaceful place

Dear editor:
In response to the letter headed “Are You New to Shelburne?”, I would like to express the following.
Yes, Shelburne’s population has increased and there may be more costs in infrastructure than originally anticipated by local council and that is a legitimate concern. However why blame all the new residents for poor behavior?
As a resident of Melancthon Township who frequently shops and runs errands in Shelburne, I have not noticed an increase in incivility with the increase in population. People I encounter continue to be pleasant and polite.
There is no excuse when a driver gestures rudely to another driver or pedestrian (and when it has happened to me on the highway it has upset me) but why assume that the culprit was a new resident and not someone driving through town?
If there have been problems with a new resident requesting that others leave the pool so they can swim in private, staff should explain the pool use policy. I think this is an isolated incident and should not reflect on the majority of new residents.
Shelburne is a little busier but we can still maintain peace and tranquility.
Sheila Hardy,
Melancthon
