Shelburne Public Library

The Seniors’ Expo was every bit as interesting as expected. The speakers provided a great deal of information that was very relevant to the attendees. It was a full-house at the new Horizon Centre in town and the speakers discussed medical alert systems, home health care devices, frauds, and scams targeted at Seniors and then of course, on another note, the services the Library  provides at Dufferin Oaks and Shelburne Residence. The key message I hoped to relay was that we would now be extending bringing resources to the homes of folks that would benefit from this service. Again, your help in identifying these seniors is important.

We have finally been able to hire 2 summer students with the assistance of federal and provincial grants. One of the students is Lindsay Whiting, who has just finished her first year at Brescia College in London. Lindsay will be supporting our TD Summer Reading program and she has already made an exciting start planning activities and programs. She will also be working at the desk and I know you will find her very helpful. Emily Sedgwick, who finished her 2nd year at Queen’s University, will be supporting the Young Adult and the Seniors program. We are delighted to have them with us this summer. It is a great opportunity for young folks to learn about serving our patrons, developing programs, and understanding how the library works in our community.

Jeanne Cruikshank attended the annual Co-op Banquet at Centre Dufferin District H.S. We have been fortunate to have Patrick Krupski as our co-op student this semester. He has been very helpful helping Jeanne prepare materials for the Story time crafts amongst other things. We always appreciate having a student helper during the term and I know we also support them in their skill development with particular emphasis on attention to detail, customer service, and team work concepts.

We are now able to provide Computer Classes again for our patrons. With the help of our students we will offer one-on-one computer assistance on such topics as setting up your email, word processing, Internet searching etc. These will start on Monday, May 27th and we will have a sign-up sheet at the library. The students will provide the support for about an hour for each patron. It is helpful if you can give us an indication of what you want to learn so the students can prepare if they are not familiar with the topic. However, I’m quite sure they have expertise in most areas in which our patrons will need help. These computer classes were very popular when we held them before and they are back by popular request!
