After one win, two losses, and two postponed games due to inclement weather, the Mansfield Cubs are back on track with their second win of the season over the Lisle Astros at the Mansfield Baseball Park on May 26.
The Cubs managed to battle back after being down 4–0 at the end of the second inning of Sunday’s game.
“Defensively, most of the game we played really well,” said coach George Linger. “We hit well – they found the gaps.”
The Astros led off with two runs in the first inning to open the scoring then following up with another solid performance in the second inning.
The Lisle team loaded the bases but a line drive to the shortstop and a play to third base stopped the opportunity to ad any more runs to the total.
T.J. Linger started it rolling for the Cubs with a third inning, two run, homer that placed the Mansfield team on the scoreboard.
A single from Brad Pendleton loaded the bases for Mansfield and a walk brought in another run with only one out for the inning.
This was a good hitting game with both teams getting some wood on the ball, but both squads were also doing well in the field.
The Astros had two deep fly balls in the fifth that almost went the distance but the Cubs left fielder managed to stop them in flight to end the inning.
A line drive to short, and a play at second base ended the Astros at-bat.
The Cub’s Tyler Linger hit a ball deep to left field along the baseline for a single run home run in the sixth inning.
That was followed by Cubs heavy hitter Rob Kinsley who notched his fifth home run of the season with a ball dropped over the fence deep in centre field.
“We were down 4–0 after the second inning,” coach Linger said. “Ty’s (Linger) home run started us.”
The final was 10–8 for the Cubs.
The North Dufferin Baseball League had somewhat of a slow start this season after the weather just wouldn’t cooperate and several games had to be postponed.
Hopefully mother nature will get it together and provide some sunshine for games in June.
The Bolton Brewers currently lead the Senior division going six games with only one loss.
They are followed by the Midland Indians with the Orillia Majors in third place.
Mansfield is listed as being in the number 12 spot with a 2–2 record so far.
The Cubs are scheduled to play a road game against the Ivy Leafs before returning to their home diamond in Mansfield on Wednesday, May 29 to host the Barrie Angels.
They will be back in Mansfield on Sunday, June 9, to take on the Creemore Braves with the first pitch schedule for 5 p.m.
